On July 1, 1976, two friends, John and William decided to turn their hobby into a business. Initially, "J&W" did model train repairs in John’s garage. Since there were only general hobby shops in the area, their customers started asking them to special order trains and supplies. With this happening, their repair business blossomed into a model train store, open evenings and weekends to accommodate “the day job”. William’s career took him west, leaving only John to continue the business. This is how J&W became short for “John & wife” as the business continued to grow.

Initially, J&W specialized in detail parts and scratch building supplies for HO modelers. In the early 1980’s a new era dawned with LGB G Scale trains coming to America, but they had a limited appeal with only European prototypes. In 1983 Kalamazoo Toy Trains, located in nearby Bangor, MI appeared on the scene and revolutionized G scale with American prototype trains. With the advent of Kalamazoo Trains, J&W became one of the first model train stores in the Midwest to specialize in G Scale.

In 1990, an informal group of large scale customers formed the Southwest Michigan Garden Railroad Club. What was a large open space behind the store evolved into one of the area’s largest garden railroad. Currently, there is over 300 feet of track running through a well landscaped area complete with trestles and tunnels.

In 1997, the store added a large addition, doubling the size. Our store has humble origins, starting as a true “cottage industry” in the old two-car garage. Today, it is a spacious store just a little off Interstate 94 in Southwestern Lower Michigan. Because we have low overhead, we offer an everyday discount of 20% off retail on most items.

We stock a variety of G products from LGB, Aristo-Craft, USA Trains, Hartland Locomotive Works, Bachmann and others. True to our HO roots, we carry a large selection of HO trains from Walthers, Accurail, Atlas, Kato and others. There is a large amount of consignment inventory as well!

Thank-you for visting our web site.. We’ll look forward to visiting with you at our store or on the phone. We would love to help you with your modeling or collecting needs.
